In fact, the more beating it is exposed to, the harder our manganese steel gets. Our 11-14% Hadfield Grade manganese steel wear plate is heat treated to the point that it develops a hard surface. On the Brinell hardness scale the product reaches a hardness score of 550 BHN through work hardening. This gives our manganese steel almost five times the hardness of mild steel and almost three times the hardness of annealed stainless steel. As such, you enjoy a longer lifespan and extended protection of your equipment and facilities. All the while, however, manganese steel maintains a ductile core. That means that despite its tough exterior it can still be readily fashioned into the form you desire.

As it wears, manganese steel plate acquires a polished surface, rendering it aesthetically pleasing to the eye. It also affords good lubricity, allowing for an easy, positive flow of material across its surface.

Cutting and Machining

Cutting and machining manganese steel are not automatic. Our manganese steel plate has been designed with cutting and machining ease in mind. It can be cut with plasma, oxy-Acetylene, laser, and water jet as well as with abrasive cut-off saws, thereby eliminating the need to acquire costly new cutting tools. Forming

Although hot forming of Hadfield Grade manganese steel plate is not recommended, the product can be cold formed. It can also be reheated, which will result in carbide precipitation and embrittlement.

Welding

Welding of our manganese steel is easily accomplished with  Electrodes or S.A. Wire, or AWS 303 or 304 stainless electrodes. Ductility will be increased in the fusion zone by penning. Preheating of our manganese steel is not recommended.

Thermal Treatment 

Manganese steel is heated to 1800+° until temperature is uniform throughout and rapidly quenched in water to produce an austenitic structure. The as-quenched hardness of our manganese steel is about 200 BHN.
